Region One Summer Meeting - Update #3 (April 8, 2023)

What you can do now:

 Volunteer your time for any duty as needed.  SIGN UP at the meeting.

1) REGISTER NOW online at www.cvids.org, click on the Region One meeting information tab. Deadline is June 25th with no late fee.

2) Reserve your room at the Merrill Hotel: 563-260-2600. Deadline for special pricing is June 25, 2023. The John Deere Classic will take whatever rooms we do not book in advance.

3) Donate one or more newer cultivars for the Region One Auction.  All proceeds return to Region One. Check your garden plant listing for plants from 2018 to 2023. Our CVIDS website has a database of our plant auctions for the past decade.  Let Diane Derganz know what you plan to donate. She will be compiling the list of plants for the Regional Auction.  A picture, from your garden or the ADS website daylily database and its description is helpful for promotion.  Prior to the auction, Diann Pavelka has agreed to help receive the plants.

4) Unique, not widespread distribution plants can be donated for the Silent Auction. Examples: Lynn Stoll’s Lavender Potpourri, Gerald Hobb’s Dazzling Rapids. Send Sue Kramer information. A picture, from your garden or the ADS website daylily database and its description is helpful for promotion.  Prefer No plants older than 2005.

5) Consider a donation of unique items for the Silent Auction.  All proceeds return to CVIDS. Put together a themed basket, contribute created items, individual garden items etc.  Start bringing items to meetings for assembly into baskets or themed groupings.  Jessica Kelly, Jill Gardner and Sylvia Bauguess are helping with the gathering.  Items will be stored at Sylvia Bauguess’s prior to the July 14th event.   A workday will be planned in early July for assembly and organization of the items for best display. Volunteer to help on the day of the event for placing items all around the room for bidding. 

6) Contact a local business in your area for contributions toward the Silent Auction or registration gifts.  Any amount is welcome.  Total need is for about 130 individual items or any amount the company is willing to donate.  Napkins, bottled water, lip balm, items for the registration bags.

7) Open garden hosts. Still open for anyone.  Those with open gardens may need help in preparing their gardens this spring or getting things tidy the days before.

  1. Our speakers, Mike Grossman and Kathleen Nordstrom are donating their 2023 collections for the auction. They are also donating the registration plants. They each have named a 2023 released plant for the Regional:  Pearl City Penguin by Kathleen and Pearl City Python by Mike. 

  2.  There was an ad in the ADS Spring Issue of theDaylily Journal. Cost was $143 for a quarter page. 

  3. Regional Preview Articles were published in the Daylily Pioneer that came out this week.  See attached the 4 page spread.  Should help in the promotion and sign up for registration.   

  4. The buses have had their initial down payment paid with Lamere Family Travel Agency with Tri-state Travel,  accommodating 56 persons each. Final installment is due in June.  Karmin Mullins and Suzie and Jonathan Poulton have volunteered to be bus captains.  Karmin would like another person with her.

  5.  Jonathan continues to add  links under the heading of 2023 Regional on the cvids.org website.  Check it out!!! Thank you!

  6. Ellen has deposited 31 registrations from 7 states, and responded with an email acknowledgement confirming receipt of their registration. 

  7. The Merrill Hotel bill is current through April.  Next payment is due in May.

  8. Jackie has been doing a great job with issuing checks for items as requested.

  9.  Wilton Community Room reserved for Friday and Saturday for the noon meal catered by the  Wilton Candy Kitchen: ham and chicken salad sandwich on a croissant, potato salad, vegetable platter, and choice of a small chocolate or vanilla shake.  Persons can visit the Muscatine County Freedom Rock, Wilton Depot Museum and a historic mural depicting 5 war veterans from Muscatine County all within a half of a block during lunch. 

  10. Handicapped accessible porta-johns will be at Harroun’s and Lett’s gardens.  A single stall will be at Riewerts.  Contract bidding is in process for the garden judging event in Kramer’s garden in Cedar Rapids.  This will be a different vendor related to territory. Pricing of the equipment went down with some price adjustments.

  11.  Sue Kramer ordered over 50 Regional live and Silent auction plants.

  12. A promotion basket was  well received at the Region 2 IL Winter Symposium.

  13. Jason Halonen, Region One facebook coordinator has been posting information.  Join and share.

  14. Things being worked on: Agenda schedule and timing, optional tours, recruitment of plants and auction gifts on Region One and Two websites, Ordering of the registration gift bags.

  15. Have received commitments of a personalized quilt of your favorite daylily, carved flock of birds for the silent auction.  Thank you!

1) Nancy decided that she is color blind! In review of the slide Kathleen Nordstrom sent about the daylily named for the Regional it is not cream; it is lavender and green!! See attachment. Pearl City Penguin is the ADA 2023 registered name.

2) Adele Keogah at American Daylily Society worked with Nancy for placing an ad in the Daylily Journal for the Spring issue.  Cost was $143 for a quarter page ad.  See attachment of ad.

3) Sam McCord worked with a travel agent friend to secure the buses for the Saturday Garden tours.  Dave Lamere  of Lamere Family Travel Agency, North Liberty set up the contract with Tri-State Tours for 2 buses that accommodate 56 persons each.  25% down payment has been received; final installment is due in June.  Who wants to be a bus captain?

4) Heather learned new technology to create google maps of our membership.  This will be used for a separate map for the open gardens and for the Saturday Garden tour. 

5) Ellen Jones has been receiving online registrations and responding with an email acknowledgement confirming receipt of their registration. She can deposit money into the regional account with a bank branch in Davenport.

6) The Merrill Hotel agreed to honor pricing for Thursday night arrivals as several persons desired to arrive early to tour gardens on Friday.  Payments were made for December, January, February installments for a total of $2,700.

7) Jackie Westhoff transferred $7,000 from the general fund of CVIDS into the Regional fund as approved during the January 14, 2023, business meeting.  Budget was presented and approved.

8) Wilton Community Room reserved for Friday set up, Saturday meal service at cost of $75.  Wilton Candy Kitchen will cater a chicken salad sandwich on a croissant, potato salad, vegetable platter, and choice of a small chocolate or vanilla shake.  Persons can visit the Muscatine County Freedom Rock, Wilton Depot Museum and a historic mural depicting 5 war veterans from Muscatine County all within a half of a block during lunch.

9) Port-a johns have been contracted with P3 of Blue Grass.  Set up on Friday, pickup during the regular scheduled business route on Monday or Tuesday for 25$ each unit.  Handicapped accessible facilities placed at Heather and Jim Harroun’s and Darrin and Shelly Lett’s gardens (each at $167). Single stall at Keith and Sally Riewerts cost $104.

10) Keith is working on the tour booklet and garden descriptions that were submitted.  This will be sent as an article to the Region One Daylily Pioneer for the printed spring issue before March 1. And then will be created into the registration booklet for attendees.

11) Sue Kramer worked on ordering over 50 Regional auction plants when she ordered the CVIDS club plants.

12) A promotion basket was sent to Region 2 for their Springfield, IL Winter Symposium February 17-18 along with registration fliers. Closest region to us.  Their meeting is after ours in Michigan.

13) Val Moeller and Nancy Carlisle developed donation letters that were sent to major businesses in our area, Lowe’s, Isabel Bloom, ECO-Lips, HyVee, Theisen’s, Farm & Fleet, Walmart, etc.  If you have a business that you want a letter sent to please contact the chairpersons.

14) Developed a plant donation and personal invitation letter to be distributed.
